I was just writing about this to my newsletter! It's one of my favourite stories about Servilia. This is my take about why Caesar gifted her the pearl at that time, based on an in-depth research project of a study of one life, mine. I had a boyfriend who left me with a huge bunch of flowers as he left to go to university. Very out of character. I knew right then he was breaking up with me. The flowers were a 'sorry' gambit.

My reckoning re the pearl: Caesar had come from Egypt having bedded and impregnated the Queen Cleopatra. Now Cleo could probably abide a long-suffering wife and the political alliances she afforded Caesar, but another mistress? Never.

So I figure the pearl was some kind of consolation prize. A thank you for years of support. I can't wait to write about all this in my next novel. Thanks for sharing the extra research and pics!
